Shanti - Ek Aurat Ki Kahani is an Indian television series that aired on DD National in 1994, and was later shown on Indian television channel STAR Plus. The series stars Mandira Bedi as Shanti. Anveshitha is an Indianhorror, supernatural drama, mystery-thriller television serial written by Dr.Iliyas Jyotsna and directed by Iliyas Ahmed under the pseudonym Pradyumna. The serial, which was made in Telugu language, premiered on ETV Telugu on August 27, 1997. The show ran for 100 episodes, and by the time of the telecast of its last episode in 1999, it became hugely popular among Telugu audience, winning eight Nandi Awards in different categories. Each of its episodes lasted for about 30 minutes and drew in the elements of the paranormal, black magic, fantasy, horror, mystery and drama. It was produced by Ramoji Rao, the head of the Ramoji Group and the then head of ETV. The serial portrays several supernatural elements like witchcraft, black magic, the Astral world, Astral travel, demonic possessions, spirits, ghosts, working of the Ouija board, extrasensory perception, spirit guides, zombies, telepathy and Séance.

Plot[edit]

The serial was based on a paranormal novel of the same name written by the director Ilias Ahmed.The story revolves around a young woman named Snigdha (Yamuna) who comes to live in Hyderabad after marrying her beau Pavan (Achyuth), an archaeologist, much to the disapproval of her mother-in-law. There, certain events lead her to discover an eerily desolated monument, inside which she encounters a strange witch-cult^{[permanent dead link]}, whose members worship a bat-like demon named Karakinkara^{[permanent dead link]}. Strangely, the place is visible only to Snigdha and when she recounts what she saw, everyone around her starts to think she is delusional, much to her chagrin.The statue of Karakinkara^{[permanent dead link]} seems to haunt her wherever she goes and she starts experiencing terrifying nightmares^{[permanent dead link]}. The terror-stricken woman spends sleepless nights, and spirals into depression with no one to believe her and a not-so-loving mother-in-law.

Meanwhile, a young woman named Masthanamma^{[permanent dead link]}(Lakshmi) is hired as a household help by Snigdha's mother-in-law. Unbeknownst to anyone, Mastanamma, who practices witchcraft, captures a terrifying paranormal entity known as 'Khabees^{[permanent dead link]}' and holds him captive on the top a wardrobe as her slave. She also falls in love with Pavan and so intends to get rid of Snigdha with the help of Khabees, who starts terrifying Snigdha from above the wardrobe.

Meanwhile, Snigdha gets pregnant much to the dislike of her mother-in-law. A series of events make Mastanamma realize her mistakes and she becomes friends with Snigdha. Eventually, Snigdha gives birth to a boy named Aniruddh (Master Anil Raj^{[permanent dead link]}), whom Mastanamma saves from the attack of the Karakinkara followers. But, soon after giving birth to Aniruddh, Snigdha dies in a fire accident and Mastanamma disappears without a trace. After the death of Snigdha, a grief-stricken Pavan raises Aniruddh on his own for 7 years, before uncovering hair-raising facts and shocking truths behind Snigdha's death.

The next few episodes answer questions like was Snigdha really dead? Does her mother-in-law has anything to do with her death? Where did Mastanamma disappear to? What happened to Khabees? Who are these Karakinkara followers? Why were they after Snigdha? How does young Aniruddh try to get into touch with his dead mother? Why does he start believing in the paranormal? Who is Professor Athma (Vallabhaneni Janardhan) and why does he befriend Aniruddh?

The first 50 episodes revolve around the struggles of Snigdha and Pavan, while the next 50 episodes focus entirely on a grown-up Aniruddh^{[permanent dead link]} (Shanmukha Srinivas), who acquires extra-sensory perception and starts remembering his past life, with the help of a spirit guide named Clara (Suma Kanakala). A few more important characters are introduced like Bheesthi Nayak^{[permanent dead link]} (Raja),the head of the Karakinkara cult, Ankitha (Meena), Aniruddh's best friend and Aneela^{[permanent dead link]}, Aniruddh's love interest. How he manages to eliminate the powerful and evil cult of Karakinkara forms the crux of the story.

Filming[edit]

The filming of the serial took place predominantly at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, where a huge Karakinkara set was constructed.

Critical reception[edit]

Anveshitha received critical acclaim from critics and audience alike for its unique, interesting and gripping story line. It became a favorite among children and adults alike for its horror content, with the character of 'Khabees' and the statue of Karakinkara becoming the trademarks of the serial. The performances of the lead actors, Yamuna and Achyuth received wide acclaim and the two actors became household names throughout the state.

Koduri Srisaila Sri Rajamouli, professionally known as S. S. Rajamouli is an Indian film director, and screenwriter known for his works primarily in Telugu cinema.^[4] He is known for directing high fantasy works such as Magadheera (2009), Eega (2012), the two part Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017).^[5][6] The Baahubali franchise has achieved the highest grossing Indian multilingual filmfranchise of all time globally, with a box office of approximately ₹1,900 crore (US$270 million).^{[7][8][9][10]} The first edition, Baahubali: The Beginning was nominated for Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, while the second edition, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion received the Saturn Award for Best International Film by the American Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.^[11][12] The second edition, garnered the Australian Telstra People's Choice Award at the 2017 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.^[13]

His other works include the sports drama film Sye and the social problem film Vikramarkudu, which was screened at the 37th International Film Festival of India in the mainstream section.^[14] The melodrama films Maryada Ramanna, Vikramarkudu and Chhatrapati were remade in various Indian languages, with successful reviews.^[15][16] Rajamouli has garnered several awards including three National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, five state Nandi Awards, the IIFA Award, two SIIMA Awards, the Star World India, 'Entertainer of The Year' in 2012, and the 'CNN-News18 Indian of the Year in Entertainment' for 2015.^[17][18][19] In 2016, he was honoured with the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour for his contributions towards the field of Art.^[20][21]

Personal life[edit]

Rajamouli was born in 1973 in Amareshwara Camp near Manvi in Raichur District, Karnataka to screenwriter K. V. Vijayendra Prasad and Raja Nandini. His family hails from Kovvur in Andhra Pradesh. His primary education was done at Kovvur and his higher education was at Eluru.^[22] He lived in Vizag for several years as his mother was from there.^[23] Rajamouli is an atheist.^[4][22]

Rajamouli started directing Telugu soap operas on Eenadu Television, under the guidance of K. Raghavendra Rao. Later on, he directed Santhi Nivasam TV Series which was produced by K. Raghavendra Rao.^[22] His first shot at Telugu films was Student No.1, with Jr. NTR in 2001. It took two years for Rajamouli to come up with his second movie Simhadri. In the two-year gap between Student No.1 and Simhadri, Rajamouli planned his first mythological film with Malayalam actor Mohanlal, but the film eventually got shelved.^[24] In 2015, Assistant art director Manu Jagath, who later worked as the art director for Baahubali, released several sketches he had drawn for the shelved Mohanlal project.^[25] Rajamouli's third movie was Sye, with actors Nithin and Genelia D'Souza. It was a first-of-its-kind movie in Tollywood, in that it was based on a rugby game. This movie was also the first instance where Rajamouli collaborated with K. K. Senthil Kumar.^[26] His next was Chatrapathi, with the music of M. M. Keeravani and cinematography by Senthil Kumar.

Breakthrough[edit]

In his next stint Vikramarkudu, Rajamouli worked with Ravi Teja. The movie was a big success and was remade into Hindi as Rowdy Rathore by Prabhu Deva, with Akshay Kumar in the lead, into Tamil as Siruthai, and in Kannada as Veera Madakari by ace actor Sudeep.^[27] He then directed Yamadonga, a socio-fantasy film praised by critics. Next was the biggest film in Telugu Cinema at the time, Magadheera, starring Ram Charan and Kajal Aggarwal; Magadheera became one of the biggest commercial successes in Telugu Cinema. He won the Nandi Award for Best Director and Filmfare Award for Best Director – Telugu for the film. This film also won the National Film Award for Best Choreography.^[28] His comedy thriller film Maryada Ramanna (2010) was remade in Hindi as Son of Sardar.^[29][30] In one of the popular MAA TV shows, Mee Star, Rajamouli said that Maryada Ramanna is his personal favourite movie among all the movies he has directed.^[31]

Rajamouli's 2012 experimental fantasy film, Eega was screened to critical acclaim at L'Étrange Film Festival.^[32][33][34] The Tamil version Naan Ee was screened at the 10th Chennai International Film Festival.^[35][36] The Telugu version has also garnered awards for the Most Original Film, Best Special Effects, Best Comedy, Best Fights, Best Film to Watch with a Crowd, Best Editing, Best Villain and Best Hero at the 8th annual Toronto After Dark Film Festival.^[37]The Telugu version was also screened the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, the Panorama section of the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival and Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.^[38][39][40] The film has received Best art direction award at the Fantaspoa film festival of Brazil.^[41] Also, it has been nominated for six award including Best film, Best Cinematographer, Best Special effects, Best Music Composer, Best Editor and Best supporting Actor for the Madrid International Film Festival.^[42]

In 2015, he directed Baahubali: The Beginning, which became the second Global highest grossing Indian film of all time, and the highest grossing Indian film of all time within India.^{[43][44][45][46]} The making of the epic film was featured in BBC's documentary on 100 Years of Indian cinema, directed by Sanjeev Bhaskar.^[47][48][49] The film was shot using Arri Alexa XT camera, marking Rajamouli's first film using digital camera.^[50][51] Rajamouli's work was cited by The Hollywood Reporter, The Guardian and The Huffington Post.^[52][53] The film was Nominated in four categories at the 42nd Saturn Awards of the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films in Los Angeles, USA.^[54]

Baahubali: The Beginning was screened at the Open Cinema Strand of Busan International Film Festival, Indian Film Festival The Hague,^[55]Sitges Film Festival in Spain,^[56]Utopiales Film Festival in France,^[57]Golden Horse Film Festival in Taipei, Taiwan,^[58]Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia,^[59]L'Etrange International Film Festival in Paris,^[60] Five Flavours Film Festival in Poland,^[61]Hawaii International Film Festival in Honolulu, Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival in Brussels, Belgium,^[62][63] and the Cannes Film Festival.^[64][65] The part II - Baahubali 2: The Conclusion was premiered at the British Film Institute,^[13] and was the inaugural feature film at the 39th Moscow International Film Festival.^[66][6][2]
